Update on New Library Catalog

The new library catalog is now available at Spalding Library Online Catalog. You can now check your account online by clicking on Review Your Account and entering your barcode number and last name. You can then renew items.

The library has over 60 databases for locating articles and many of them link to the complete article.

The library has over 100,000 titles.

Librarians are available to assist you whenever the library is open and are information professionals so stop by the reference desk with any questions you have about research and related topics like citation, location of departments, your professor's phone number, etc. We are here to help so stop by and see us anytime!

The library can request books and articles from other libraries all across the country and have them for you in about a week. Just click on ILL Request on the databases or for books use the Document Delivery section on the Library Home Page at www.spalding.edu/library.

The library will be getting a new and easier to search catalog in the near future. More updates will follow!

National Information Literacy Month

President Obama has declared October National Information Literacy Month. Do you know what information literacy is? It is the ability to determine when you have an information need, locate needed information, evaluate the information, and use the information effectively. These skills all involve reading, using the library, conducting research, and writing. The library, the Academic Resource Center, and the Writing Center are all located here in the library and are able to assist you in these areas. Contact them today.

The main branch is open on one floor only and has limited service as they are still recovering from the flood. The other branches are open including the newest branch in Newburg. The website has limited capability so J-STOR may not be available.

If you don't find a title on the shelf by call no. please ask as it may be on the preview shelf at the circulation desk.

Help Us Help You--Document Delivery Tips

We are happy to order items from other libraries for you (books and articles), but we need your help to successfully locate and obtain materials for you. Here is a list of tips--
1) We need a week to obtain items. Some items may take longer, but most take about a week. Please check the Metroversity and public library catalogs if you need items sooner as you can take your Spalding id and go to any Metroversity library to use/checkout items.
2) Click on the ILL request button in the article databases and fill in your contact information. Unless you tell us otherwise we operate using e-mail.
3) If you do have to use the form for document delivery for books or articles not on a database, be sure to fill in all information areas and use exact information (e.g., journal titles, article titles, vol., and page numbers).
4) We only order 10 items at a time so we can better keep track of materials.
5) Please be sure to return items (books) on time so that your borrowing priviliges can continue.
6) We can order dissertations for you, but you must pay for them ($30.00).

Student Workshop Survey--Thanks for Responding

Thanks to all of you who responded to our survey on library workshops. The results indicated that database searching and citation are the topics most needed by students. We hope to offer workshops on these two topics in the fall, one in session 1 in the evening and the other in session 2 on a Saturday afternoon. More details will follow so watch the website and blog for more information.

Metroversity Access

The Louisville Public Library is a wonderful resource - all you need is a Library card. If you live, work, go to school or own property in Jefferson County you are eligible for a card.

Likewise, Spalding Unviersity students and faculty have access to walk-in service at other academic libraries in the Louisville area including:

University of Louisville - including the Medical Library
University of Indiana-Southeast
Jefferson Community and Technical College
Bellarmine University
Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary
The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

They all have unique collections and helpful staff.

The library is open from 7:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Thursday, Friday 7:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday from 8 a.m.-8 p.m.
The library has access to 60 different journal databases and 100,000 books on a variety of topics.
The library has Microsoft Office 2007 on all its computers and can assist you with basic word processing needs.
The library has a great staff that can assist you in finding books, articles, and Internet resources on just about any topic you can imagine.
The library databases can now be accessed via a Blackboard site, Spalding Library Information.
Librarians can assist you with Blackboard.

Louisville Free Public Library Resources

Spalding faculty, staff, and students can access resources at the Louisville Free Public Library from home. One especially helpful resource is for scholarly journal articles. You will need to get a library card from the Louisville Free Public Library and set up an account. You must use the password from this account each time you access the public library's research databases.
